Ballast Water Management Systems

Treatment architecture and system selection for commercial vessels. Equipment is one part of delivery.

Last technical review 2026-08-28

BallastWater.com.au provides Australian market access, engineering and project support for ballast water treatment solutions, including PACT Marine technology.

Figures below reflect manufacturer-published information as at the last technical review. They are not a substitute for current OEM data sheets, type-approval certificates or project-specific engineering.

Filtration

Manufacturer-published architecture uses 40 μm self-cleaning filtration during ballasting to remove larger organisms and suspended matter before UV treatment.

UV treatment

Medium-pressure ultraviolet reactors are used to inactivate remaining organisms. During deballasting, published process descriptions route flow through UV treatment with the filter bypassed.

Automation

BWMS installation includes control, monitoring and recording appropriate to the vessel automation environment. Integration requirements are established during engineering review.

Modularity

PACT publishes modular, containerised and split configurations, with vertical or horizontal installation options to suit available space.

System capacities

Published treatment capacities span approximately 200 to 4,000 m³/h. Final equipment configuration is subject to engineering review and manufacturer confirmation.

Vessel applications

Manufacturer materials describe application across bulk carriers, tankers, container ships, passenger vessels and specialist commercial ships. Suitability for a particular vessel is not assumed from a website selector.

Operating modes

Ballasting typically uses filtration plus UV. Deballasting typically uses UV treatment with filter bypass, according to published process descriptions.

Installation considerations

Footprint, pipe routing, pump characteristics, electrical supply, pressure loss, hazardous-area rating, access and class requirements all constrain how a system is fitted.
